Proclamación del Día de Ayuno y Oración, del 9 de julio de 1812 / Proclamation of Day of Fasting and Prayer (July 9, 1812)

Considerando que el Congreso de los Estados Unidos, por una resolución conjunta de las dos Cámaras, han sancionado una petición para que un día pueda ser recomendado para ser observado por el pueblo de los Estados Unidos con solemnidad religiosa como un día de humillación pública y oración; y

Considerando que dicha recomendación permitirá a las varias denominaciones y sociedades religiosas tan dispuestas a ofrecer en un mismo tiempo sus votos comunes y adoraciones a Dios Todopoderoso , en una solemne ocasión producida por la guerra en la que Él se ha complacido en permitir que la injusticia de un potencia extranjera involucre a estos Estados Unidos:

Por lo tanto, recomiendo el próximo tercer jueves de agosto como un día oportuno para ser apartado para los fines devotos prestados al Soberano del Universo y el Benefactor de la Humanidad el homenaje público debido a sus santos atributos; de reconocer las transgresiones que podrían justamente provocar las manifestaciones de Su desagrado divino; de buscar su perdón misericordioso y su asistencia en los grandes deberes con arrepentimiento y enmienda, y sobre todo ofrecer súplicas fervientes de que en la temporada actual de la calamidad y guerra tomará al pueblo estadounidense bajo su cuidado y protección peculiar; que Él guiaría sus consejos públicos, animará su patriotismo y otorgar su bendición en sus brazos; que Él inspirará a todas las naciones el amor por la justicia, la concordia y una reverencia por el precepto infalible de nuestra santa religión para hacer a los demás lo que esperarían de ellos; y, por último, que, convirtiendo los corazones de nuestros enemigos de la violencia y la injusticia que envenenan sus consejos contra nosotros, apresuren una restauración de las bendiciones de la paz.

Whereas the Congress of the United States, by a joint resolution of the two Houses, have signified a request that a day may be recommended to be observed by the people of the United States with religious solemnity as a day of public humiliation and prayer; and

Whereas such a recommendation will enable the several religious denominations and societies so disposed to offer at one and the same time their common vows and adorations to Almighty God on the solemn occasion produced by the war in which He has been pleased to permit the injustice of a foreign power to involve these United States:

I do therefore recommend the third Thursday in August next as a convenient day to be set apart for the devout purposes of rendering the Sovereign of the Universe and the Benefactor of Mankind the public homage due to His holy attributes; of acknowledging the transgressions which might justly provoke the manifestations of His divine displeasure; of seeking His merciful forgiveness and His assistance in the great duties of repentance and amendment, and especially of offering fervent supplications that in the present season of calamity and war He would take the American people under His peculiar care and protection; that He would guide their public councils, animate their patriotism, and bestow His blessing on their arms; that He would inspire all nations with a love of justice and of concord and with a reverence for the unerring precept of our holy religion to do to others as they would require that others should do to them; and, finally, that, turning the hearts of our enemies from the violence and injustice which sway their councils against us, He would hasten a restoration of the blessings of peace.
